String Furniture

1949-today

Some things become so strongly associated with a specific time, they actually end up timeless. That is one way of summarizing Nisse and Kajsa Strinning's contribution to the Scandinavian design history. But what sparked the idea to the shelving system String®?

Bonnier's public library realized that the majority of Swedish homes were not furnished with a focus on bookshelves, which made it quite difficult for them to sell books. In 1949 they announced a competition where they asked all contributors to submit a design for a shelf with a few criteria. The shelf needed to be affordable, easy to ship and equally easy to assemble. The rest is history.

From the 50s to the 70s, the String system thrived, and since the 2000s it has experienced a revival and gained broad popularity.

String® creates and produces high-quality furniture with a Scandinavian design. The timeless expression of this design is equally important to the brand as the functionality. You might have heard of the iconic String® shelf? A flexible shelving system designed by the Swedish architect Nisse Strinning together with his wife Kajsa Strinning, back in 1949. Or about the Museum shelf? Designed by architect studio TAF in collaboration with the Swedish National Museum. Or did you know about the brand’s Works assortment? Designed and developed by architect Anna von Schewen and industrial designer Björn Dahlström. We dare to say it is impossible to find equally beautiful yet functional work desks out there. And we are proud to have them in our collection at Inspiration Tales.
